Morocco’s identity is a vibrant mix of Berber, Arab and European cultures, so it’s not a surprise that its music is as diverse as it is. Here are the sounds of Morocco.
Aita
Originating from the countryside of Morocco, Aita is a Bedouin musical style that’s popular among nomadic Arab tribes.
Amazigh
Also known as Berber music, there are many varieties of Amazigh folk music, including Ahwash, Ahidus and Guedra.
Andalusi
A major genre of Arabic music, Andalusi classical music originated in the music of Al-Andalus (Muslim Iberia) between the 9th and 15th centuries.
Chaabi
Originally performed in markets, Chaabi folk music can now be found at many celebrations in Morocco.
Raï
While Rai music started in Algeria, it has since become extremely popular in Morocco and is known for mixing French and Arabic.
Gnawa
A mystical form of music and incantation of West Africa, Gnawa music was initially introduced to Morocco by Sub-Saharan Africans and has since become part of the Moroccan musical tradition.
